It’s a bit confusing, but the word “salt” has two meanings in chemistry. In general terms, a salt is a substance that is formed when an acid is neutralised. So, when we talk about the white crystalline substance that goes on chips we ought to say, “Common Salt” or “Table Salt”. The chemical name for common salt is sodium chloride.
